A federal appeals court ruled that the Food and Drug Administration failed to adequately warn consumers about the risks of taking the prescription drug Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction.
The decision was issued last week, but the FDA says it has "a strong warning that the drug may not be effective in treating erectile dysfunction."
In a letter to the agency, Dr. David S. Eisenberg, a professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, said that Viagra's long-term safety is not adequately evaluated. He added that the FDA should be cautious about the drug's use if it is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra is a brand name for the prescription drug sildenafil, the active ingredient in the popular prescription drug Viagra.
Viagra, which was approved by the FDA in 1998, was the first drug approved for treating erectile dysfunction in the U. S.
The FDA says it was aware of the risks in 1998 but had not evaluated the drug's safety before that year.
The drug was marketed by Pfizer Inc., which has more than 100 clinical trials of the drug. It has been prescribed by about 100 patients, and it was the first drug approved for the treatment of ED. Pfizer says it has no plans to market the drug in the U.
The FDA said it was concerned that the drug could cause sexual dysfunction and should not be used by men who suffer from sexual arousal disorder.
The company also said that the drug could increase the risk of stroke or heart attack in men. The drug was not linked to an increased risk of these serious side effects.
Viagra was also not linked to a heart attack.
In a statement, Pfizer said that it had not received reports of a heart attack or stroke among the patients it reviewed.
The company added that the drug did not cause sexual dysfunction in patients with cardiovascular disease.
The company did not comment on whether the FDA was aware of the drug's potential risks.
The agency did not respond to a request for comment.
The FDA declined to comment on the case.

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - The Food and Drug Administration has granted a temporary monopoly on erectile dysfunction drugs. If the FDA approves a drug for sale, it can buy the drug without prescription from pharmacies, the agency said.
The move came following an order from the FDA in November, but the drugmaker has also announced that it will no longer be selling the drug to customers.
The drug is a generic form of Viagra, which is sold as sildenafil and tadalafil. Viagra is also sold in generic form.
The FDA has issued a notice to market the drug, which is not approved by the agency and will likely remain available without a prescription.
The FDA said the company will be subject to an analysis of its market data. If approved, Viagra will be available from pharmacies for about $1 per pill. But it will cost $25 for a 10-pack or $75 for a 20-pack.
Sildenafil is also sold in generic form, but it's sold by itself without prescription. The generic is also sold in a similar way to Cialis, the FDA said.
The company said Viagra and Cialis are used by people who are not taking the same medication as they should.
